These paintings allow me to embrace what I have previously denied myself: the power and pride my family carries. I am shaped by my cultural heritage. It tethers me to my ancestors through our shared joys, pains, hopes, and fears. The stories of my grandparents’ home have now been lost and forgotten, but somehow I continue to learn from them. I was inspired to create this work after the passing of my grandmother. To bring life and appreciation of animals that are a part of my family's history and of the home they grew up in. My family history is echoed through my choices, through difficult lessons endured, through my cherished memories, through my paintings. 

   My work highly prioritizes the implementation of visual texture from the very beginning. The act in itself of the application of layered paint, the outlines and the meticulous details, becomes meditative to me. The process excites me as I get to play between different textures to create something that honors my subjects. While demanding, it provides room for me to reflect on my life at home and the stories that are ingrained into my being – to create a new history that is blended with the quiet love and bold pride.  

   This is my love for you, Grandma, that distance didn’t allow me to give, but you are with me every day.
